Chameleons recorded “Where Are You?” twice. A first version came out in 2024. Then playing it live changed the song enough that the band recorded it again for Arctic Moon, their first studio album in more than two decades.
Mark Burgess told Chaos Control last December that he expected the writing to take much longer. The basic ideas came within weeks. Reworking old material for the 2024 EP Tomorrow Remember Yesterday had done the groundwork.
Burgess (vocals, bass) and Reg Smithies (guitar) are the band’s surviving founders. Since the band reformed in 2021, Stephen Rice (guitar), Danny Ashberry (keys) and Todd Demma (drums) complete the line-up.
Where to start
The album has seven tracks, from “Where Are You?” to “Saviours Are A Dangerous Thing”. The one to hear first is “David Bowie Takes My Hand”. It ran past ten minutes until Ashberry restructured it.
Burgess says the older songs keep moving too: “Songs have to feel fresh, or you can’t perform them.” So the “Where Are You?” at Razzmatazz on Sunday may not be the one on the record.
The Barcelona show
Chameleons play Razzmatazz 2, Barcelona, on 8 November 2026. Doors open at 19:00; Dusty Gannon plays at 19:30 and Chameleons at 20:30. Advance tickets are listed at €31 plus fees.
