Natasha Bedingfield Wrote 'Unwritten' for Her Little Brother. Now It Has 2 Billion Spotify Streams.

More than two decades after its release, the song has reached another milestone. Its story starts with a missed birthday, a poem and a bus fare someone couldn't afford.

Natasha Bedingfield's "Unwritten" has passed two billion streams on Spotify. She celebrated the milestone on Instagram, thanking co-writers Danielle Brisebois and Wayne Rodrigues, along with the collaborators who helped make the song.

The song wasn't written for millions of people, though. It was written for one.

A birthday present for Joshua

While working on her debut album in Los Angeles, Bedingfield missed her younger brother Joshua's 14th birthday. Instead of sending a regular present, she wrote him something.

She wanted to tell him he didn't need to have his future figured out. At fourteen, she felt, people already expect you to know which college you'll go to and what you'll study.

It started as a poem. In a session with songwriter Danielle Brisebois and producer Wayne Rodrigues, it turned into "Unwritten". Brisebois has said she never saw the poem itself, only the word "unwritten" on Bedingfield's computer.

The rain

The chorus line about rain on your skin came from Brisebois. During her broke years in New York, there were days she couldn't afford the bus and walked home in the rain. She decided she was the lucky one. The people in taxis were missing it.

The recording stayed close to home too. Bedingfield's younger sister Nikola was among the voices on the gospel-style backing choir.

A song that keeps coming back

"Unwritten" reached No. 6 in the UK and No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, and became the theme song of MTV's The Hills.

Almost twenty years later, the song found a new audience. Director Will Gluck used it in the 2023 romantic comedy Anyone But You, starring Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell, as a character's go-to song for calming his nerves. The film helped fuel a TikTok resurgence, sending the song back into the charts in 2024. In February 2024, it reached No. 14 on Spotify's global chart.

Speaking to PEOPLE in September 2026, Bedingfield described how she and her collaborators had wanted the song to become an anthem everyone could sing. What began as a message to her younger brother had grown into something much bigger.

Two billion

At the time of that interview, "Unwritten" was approaching two billion Spotify streams. Roughly six weeks later, it crossed the milestone.

What started as a birthday present for a fourteen-year-old has become a song that millions of people have made their own. Twenty-two years later, the message hasn't changed much. Nobody has to know yet how their story ends.
